How
about going Dutch… and working in an interdisciplinary team?
3 Postdoc
positions available at MESA+ for EU funded research project
MESA+
Research Institute
MESA+
is a research institute of the University of Twente, focusing
on multidisciplinary research on materials, technologies,
and systems for the information society. Microsystem Technology,
Microelectronics and Materials Science are the main research
activities. The institute combines research from Electrical
Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemical Technology and Mechanical
Engineering. MESA+, formed in 1999 as a merger of MESA and
the Center for Materials Research (CMO), organizes its research
along two directions: vertically, the research groups focus
on unidisciplinary fields; horizontally, the so-called Strategic
Research Orientations (SROs) are truly multidisciplinary.
The institute has a staff of about 380 people (of which
about 280 are scientists) and maintains a state-of-the-art
clean-room.
NanoLink:
Micro-, Nano-, and Molecular Engineering for Information Technology
NanoLink
is one of the five Strategic Research Orientations at MESA+.
It focuses on new concepts for the fabrication and operation
of nanoscale devices for information technology. The main
objective is to combine interdisciplinary engineering approaches
such as micro- and nanofabrication (top-down) and self-assembly
of nanoparticles and molecules (bottom-up). Current activities
involve nanoscale patterning, MEMS, scanning probe methods,
and supramolecular chemistry. The MESA+ groups on transducer
technology (TT) headed by Prof. M. Elwenspoek and on supramolecular
chemistry (SMCT) headed by Prof. D. N. Reinhoudt take part
in NanoLink.
EU-project:
ATOMS (Assembler Tool for Molecular Structures)
NanoLink
and the two MESA+ groups (TT and SMCT) participate in a
new project, called ATOMS, funded by the 5th Framework of
the European Commission. The project goal is to design,
microfabricate and operate a MEMS nanostencil shadow-mask.
This highly interdisciplinary project combines top-down
and bottom-up methods involving techniques such as silicon
micromachining and microengineering, supramolecular and
biochemistry, UHV techniques, and nanotechnology. Project
partners are the MESA+ Research Institute, IBM Zurich Research
Lab, University of Cambridge, Technical University of Denmark,
and Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
WANTED!
Three Postdocs for a multi-disciplinary team
For
ATOMS, MESA+ announces 3 vacant Postdoc (PD) positions.
One PD will mainly work on nanostencil microfabrication
focusing on membrane and aperture formation. Another PD
will concentrate on the design and fabrication of micro-actuators
for controlling the nanostencil apertures. In close collaboration
both PDs will have to develop the necessary fabrication
technology for matching the requirements of both the membrane
and micro-actuators. The third PD will work on the chemical
modification of the nanostencil membranes, actuators, and
other nanostencil structures in order to prevent them from
being covered unintentionally with deposits and for tuning
aperture sizes. For this challenging and truly interdisciplinary
project we are looking for two PhDs with MEMS experience,
in particular silicon processing, and one PhD with an organic
or polymer chemistry background, preferably with experience
in surface functionalization.
Project
starting date is April/May 2000 with a duration of 2 years.
