1. Three delegates of focus-africa, Messrs,
Olu Onabanjo, Mack Omodunbi and Austine
Otaru participated in the Conference &
Business Convention on Environmental
Solutions for Emerging Markets that took
place at the Olympic Museum, Lausanne, on
January 28 -29, 2003. The conference was
organised by the Swiss Environmental
Solutions for Emerging Countries (SESEC).

The features of the conference are:
- Desertification: trend and need in arid
regions;
- Techniques and technology for Increasing
productivity in arid areas;
- Waste water, and Rebuilding wastewater
treatment;
- Cleaner production in industries
- Sustainable development in the tourism
sector;
- New Techniques in Desalination
- Sustainable development in the built
environment;
- Cost-effective Energy Implementation and
Renewable Solutions.

Overall Trend:
Much is being done, and much more is still
to be done to fight desertification and
pollution that accompanies globalisation.
New technologies are springing out that
could address these problems in addition
to alleviating global shortage of water.
In order to benefit from these developments,
governments of developing and underdeveloped
countries must have to address the issue of
Stability, Security and the Rule of law (SSR)
if they want a share in the emerging markets
scenario.

5. Biotechnologies/Dermatologie: Arrivee
prochaine d'une serie de nouveaux traitements
contre le psoriasis Environ 1,5 millions
d'Americains souffrent de psoriasis, une
affection de la peau provoquee par le
systeme immunitaire qui interprete mal une
infection microbienne. L'industrie
pharmaceutique preconise toute une
serie de medicaments pour le traitement
du psoriasis. Ainsi Amgen souhaite
l'extension de son Enbrel, deja utilise
pour le traitement de l'arthrite rhumatoide,
au psoriasis. De leur cote, Genentech et
Xoma ont demande a la Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) l'autorisation de
mise sur le marche de leur Raptiva. Ayant
deja recu une autorisation pour l'arthrite,
le Remicade de Johnson & Johnson, devrait
suivre un chemin identique a celui de
l'Enbrel. Cependant, c'est l'entreprise
Biogen qui a ete la premiere a decrocher
l'autorisation de la FDA pour l'Amevive.
Le cout de ce medicament, administre sous
forme d'injections hebdomadaires pendant 12
semaines, s'eleve entre 7 000 et 10 000
dollars. Pour sa part, le methotrexate,
administre par voie orale, coute entre 1 000
et 2 000 dollars par an. Cependant, tout
comme les traitements du psoriasis disponibles
actuellement sur le marche, il peut entrainer
d'eventuels problemes renaux. Le traitement
Amevive comporte egalement certains risques,
puisqu'il suppose une suppression partielle
des reactions immunitaires. Aussi chaque serie
d'injections doit-elle etre suivie d'un
examen consistant a mesurer tres precisement
le taux de cellules T protectrices presentes
dans l'organisme. Les essais cliniques de
l'Amevive indiquent que 15 a 40% des personnes
testees ont connu une amelioration durable de
leur etat de sante. NYT 01/02/03 (F.D.A.
approves biotechnology drug for psoriasis)

6. Knowledge - the most important capital.
In its Strategy 2010, SDC formulates: „For
the countries and partners of the South and
East, knowledge is a central prerequisite
for development. SDC promotes learning
processes that are based on knowledge,
ability and behaviour, and that extend
the possibilities of action. To this end,
it incorporates the use of local knowledge,
and bases its co-operation with partners
on mutual respect.” More about SDC and its
